LA PAZ, ABRA

LA PAZ WEAVERS

Abra is the hometown of the indigenous Itneg Tribe who are well known not just for natural dyes but also for loom weaving. Their traditional fabric called “piningitan” or “bankudo” is a heritage craft, an intricate weaving style that takes months to finish.

The town of La Paz is home to traditional loom weaving specialized in producing fine woven fabrics called abel. These textiles are hand loomed by women of the village who have learned the artistry from their mothers and grandmothers.

Mostly women are involved in this practice and they have their own weaving corners in their houses. They do their abel weaving during their free time. Children as  young as eight years old are practicing and joining the tradition.
